Rising damp is a condition where water moves through the walls horizontally through any space it finds. It can lead to unsightly stains on plaster and wallpaper, as well as peel paint and cause mould growth and other problems. If left untreated, it can cause severe damage to the home and health, as well as the devaluation of the property. It won’t go away on its own, and it can’t be covered up with special paint. The goal is to prevent the dampness from entering the spaces and rising up your wall. Aquapol offers a wide variety of options for treatment.
Mechanical
Mechanical solutions have been around for years, and they are highly effective. With this option, a new damp proof course (DPC) is inserted into your masonry. The wall is cut or drilled horizontally, and a DPC is inserted.
There are a variety of technologies available, such as wall substitution and metal plate insertion. With wall substitution, multiple brickwork layers are replaced by a new material with a new DPC inserted. With metal plate insertion, the wall is cut horizontally with a diamond chainsaw so special steel plates can be shot into your brickwork.
Chemical
Chemical solutions can also be used to block rising damp. For this method, water-repellent chemicals are injected into the walls, which requires two steps. The first is the installation of the liquid DPC and the second phase is the replastering of the wall. While this option may take more time and require more work to be done, it can work well if done by a professional. However, it is easy to make mistakes when applying the chemicals, and it may need to be redone as the material ages. Therefore, the chemical method may not be the best choice or may require some mechanical methods to be fully effective.
